Faith and Science: Singing to God

Chris Clemens

University of North Carolina

My name is Dr. Chris Clemens, and I am an astrophysicist for Jesus. It shocks many of my fellow astrophysicists to hear this. It shocks many of my fellow Catholics and Christians to hear this. And I know it shocks many of my esteemed faculty colleagues in Chapel Hill to hear this.

Getting Ready for College

Sept 22-Nov 17, 2013

High achieving students are busy, intensely focused on graduation goals, college admissions and living up to high expectations. Sometimes, that rush to finish high school well overshadows the BIGGEST PICTURE OF ALL - defining the most important long-term contributions students can make as leaders on the college campus, and afterward in society. This exciting five-week seminar is designed to prepare juniors and seniors in high school for leadership excellence in the college and university academic setting.

The Thomas International Center's Leadership Series promotes vibrant discussion on key intellectual issues that students will confront:

  • Can we really know the truth and identify right from wrong?
  • How should we make moral choices, and what's the relationship between truth and freedom?
  • How can we emerge as leaders on campus as well as make the high grades we expect of ourselves as top scholars?

The Seminar helps students develop skills necessary to move beyond merely doing well in college. The skills students learn during the five-week seminar are essential for personal and professional development and strong campus leadership. These include the capacity to study for long-term assimilation of knowledge rather than short-term regurgitation of information for upcoming tests. Such learning methods allow students to conserve study time and remain high achievers as their college courses progress. What's more, the skills empower them as innovative thinkers and presenters.

The Seminar also introduces students to outstanding professionals in different fields. These professionals share their background and life experiences and reflect on the intellectual and moral qualities that are essential to success in a chosen field of endeavor.

The goal of this seminar is to stimulate high school students (juniors and seniors) to think about their life objectives and important steps for achieving them.
